Day 87
Name: Al-Ghaniyy
“… And Allah is Free of need and Forbearing.” [2:263]
Many times this name is translated as rich. When a person is rich, they are called ghaniyy. However, the term ghinaa in arabic means self sufficient and rich people are called ghaniyy because they are so wealthy that they don’t need things from other people because they already have it. So they are free of need.
But even a rich person, even though he has a lot of things, still isn’t free of need. They still NEED food to survive; they still NEED sleep to survive, and defecation to survive. They completely aren’t free of need from anything. Even the rich person isn’t free of need because they depend on their wealth for everything so they truly are not independent; they in reality are so poor that all their hopes are in money. Only Allah is truly ghaniyy. Allah doesn’t need anything. Allah doesn’t need us. Allah is free and independent from any needs.
Today we live in a ‘me’ generation, in an‘independent’ generation. And in this ‘independent’ mindset, we think we don’t need anyone, we can do whatever we please and that’s that. However, Allah reminds us that we are always dependant on Him, always. We are always dependant. We are dependant on Allah for rain, for the automatic processes in our bodies that we don’t voluntarily control, we are dependant on Allah to provide for us- we are so completely dependant on Allah. Even those who don’t even acknowledge Allah, the atheist, is still so dependant on Allah but because of their blindness, they don’t even know it.
Allah is in no need of anything but we are always in need, especially in need of Allah- His mercy, His forgiveness, His love, His pleasure.
Day 84
Dhul Jalal Wal Ikram
“And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.” [55:27]
This attribute of Allah is a combination of two names which are opposites: Jalal and Ikram. ‘Jalal’ refers to the anger of Allah, the glory, the greatness of Allah and ‘Ikram’ comes from kareem, from love, rahma, kindness. So this name of Allah is a reminder of all these names. Do wrong, you will be held accountable for Allah is the just, he punishes those that do wrong but if you turn back, if you repent Allah is Ar-Rahman, the raheem, the kareem.
This name is a reminder of Allah’s jalal (anger) and karam (mercy/love). Sometimes people emphasize and only focus on one attribute- either they despair over their sins and forget Allah’s karam or they focus on the karam and forget about Allah’s Jalal (anger) but this name encourages us to remember both attributes.

Even the sight of you growing tired
Even the sight of your back to me
Growing smaller in the distance
Your eyes, your hand
I want to look into your eyes
And hold your hand forever
I already wish I could turn back time
